James Evanson

James Evanson, furniture designer, born in Montana in 1946, received early training from his father, a cabinetmaker and carpenter. Evanson went on to study at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and received an architectural degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

As an artist, architect and furniture designer working in New York City, James Evanson has been on the forefront of the international "functional art" movement. Since his first showing at Art et Industrie Gallery in New York in 1979, his work has traveled throughout the world. In 1990 his lighting was exhibited in a one-man show in Tokyo. New lamps were also created especially for the Memphis Collection in Milan in 1986 and 1988. The "Lighthouse" lamps, a 1984 design, received world-wide attention and became a symbol of the 80's.

Evanson's "Comet Club" barstool was selected for the 1986 ID Annual Design Review. His "Lake Dutchess" chair, a contemporary interpretation of the classic Adirondack lawn chair, received the 1993 Roscoe Best of Seating Award.
